Sailboat Racing 101: A Classroom & On-the-WaterSeminar
June 28, 2025, at the Lake City Yacht Club
This one-day seminar is open to sailors who have completed the 2025 LCYC Sailing School (SS) course, alumni from past SS courses, and members of the LCYC. If you do not meet the preceding enrollment criteria, please submit a sailing resume to Bruce Santerre. bgsanterre@gmail.com. An enrollment decision will be made based on your sailing experience. Enrollment will be capped at 16 students.
The purpose of this seminar is to introduce sailors to the racing basics and fundamentals. In the morning classroom session, students will review sailing safety and learn the sailboat racing rules. During on-the-water training, students will practice basic sailboat and sail handling skills on a keelboat with an experienced race skipper. Students will be able to apply the skills and knowledge learned through the sailing school and classroom session during practice starts and an actual race. Registration deadline is June 23, 2025. Cost: $40 per student.

Classroom Session
8:45 am Meet in the LCYC clubhouse. Introductions and overview of the day; Coffee, juice and water will be provided
9:15 am Review of sailing safety; introduction to racing rules; basic keelboat and sail handling techniques
10:30 am Break
10:45 am Meet the skippers; orientation of your boat at the dock
11:30 am Light lunch at the clubhouse. Please let me know if you have any food allergies or special dietary requirements
12:15 pm Boats leave dock; hoist sails; conduct COB drill
1:15 pm 2-3 practice starts
1:45 pm Race; W/L; approximately 1 hour in length depending on wind
3 pm Boats return to dock; tidy up boat: fold/furl sails, coil lines, and put on sail covers
3:30 pm De-brief on club deck; what did you learn; questions; next step
